Overview

Discover the fascinating history of ancient Thebes on a private day tour to the Valley of the Queens, Deir el-Medina, and Medinet Habu on Luxor’s West Bank. This carefully designed Luxor tour takes you beyond the most famous monuments and introduces you to royal tombs, ancient craftsmen, and one of the largest surviving temple complexes from the New Kingdom.

Your journey begins with a visit to the Valley of the Queens, the ancient burial place of queens, royal children, and members of the royal family. The valley is known for beautifully decorated tombs featuring colorful scenes, religious texts, and detailed representations of ancient Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife. Depending on access and opening arrangements, you may have the opportunity to explore some of the most important decorated tombs in the area.

Continue to Deir el-Medina, the remarkable village where the skilled artisans and craftsmen who built and decorated the royal tombs lived. Walking through the remains of this ancient settlement gives you a different perspective on Egyptian civilization. You can see houses, streets, temples, and tombs belonging to the workers who created many of the masterpieces found throughout the Theban necropolis. The private tombs here are particularly impressive because of their vivid colors and detailed scenes depicting everyday life, offerings, agriculture, and religious traditions.

The final major stop is Medinet Habu, the impressive mortuary temple of King Ramesses III. Its massive gateways, towering walls, courtyards, columns, and reliefs provide an excellent introduction to the power and artistic achievements of Egypt’s New Kingdom. The temple walls preserve scenes of military campaigns, religious ceremonies, and ancient Egyptian rituals.

Throughout the tour, your local Egyptologist guide can explain the historical significance of each site and help you understand the connection between the royal family, craftsmen, temples, and ancient Egyptian religion. You will also have time to take photographs and explore each location at a comfortable pace.

This Luxor West Bank tour is ideal for travelers who want to experience more than the standard attractions and discover the stories behind the people who created ancient Egypt’s extraordinary monuments. It combines royal history, ancient craftsmanship, religious architecture, and beautifully preserved artwork into one memorable day in Luxor.
